We love to hike. In fact, we met on a hike with our singles group way back in the late 90’s. Neither one of us was looking for a relationship, but God had another idea about that. Three years later, we said “I do” and the rest, as they say, is history. Now we are on an adventure of our life and loving every minute of it. We are truly blessed.
We have travelled down this way for the last few years and I have wanted to hike the Painted Desert in the Imperial Wilderness area. It isn’t that far from Imperial Dam LTV but we always seem to be going the Yuma way and the Painted Desert is north, not south. On Friday, Dale gave me the keys to the truck and guess where we went. Yep, to the Painted Desert.
The Painted Desert is on Hwy 95 between Quartzsite and the guns to the Yuma Proving Ground. The turn off is 8 miles north of the guns. On the way to the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge, we passed a runway for the YPG and other training places. This road also had a good roller coaster ride of dips, but the speed limit is 25mph and that takes all the fun out of it!
The weather was perfect – not too hot and a few clouds in the sky. Perfect for hiking. The trail to the Painted Desert is 1.5 miles long and makes a loop from one end of the parking area to the other. This trail is also an interpretive trail and we were able to learn some names of the plants and trees in the desert.
After our hike, we drove to the several overview’s they have to look out over the Colorado River. When we returned to the turn off for the Wildlife Refuge we turned toward civilization and Martinez Lake. The community there is called Fishers Landing. Lots of RV’s and trailers and huge adobe homes.
We stopped at the boat docking area and rest stop for lunch. I stood on the edge of the lake listening to the many bird calls. At that moment I wished I would have paid more attention to Dick and Steve when they went bird watching so I would know what I was listening to! It was beautiful.
In the background of this photo you see Dome Rock. This is another place I want to explore but that will have to wait until next winter. We are moving on this week. It was an awesome day and a great hike.
